A message of support from

Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cornwall

“For generations, communities across the world have celebrated the harvest by gathering together to give thanks for the food we receive from the land. Years ago, the tradition was almost as important a part of our national calendar as Christmas and Easter.

In these challenging times, it is a particularly poignant festival.

During lockdown earlier this year, for many, keeping homes stocked with enough food for the family was a significant and constant struggle; one that was frequently met by the kindness of strangers.  People rallied to make sure their elderly and vulnerable neighbours had the food they needed. Pubs set up take away services. And food service organisations that would normally be supplying hotels and restaurants, re-organised to provide food parcels for those in need.

It is to the enormous credit of everyone involved in the food chain that the supply of food was maintained.  I would above all like to thank the farmers, producers, growers and pickers who continued to put food on our plates, under the most testing of circumstances.

This year, having seen how heavily we rely on all those who work in the food industry, it is more vital than ever to celebrate the harvest.

I hope the virtual National Harvest Service, held on the last weekend of British Food Fortnight, will give us all, in our homes and in our communities, the opportunity to give thanks for the bountiful food that the land provides – and to thank our food producers from the bottom of our hearts.”
