Wilsons of Westray

Artisan cheesemakers Jason and Nina have a small herd of pedigree Ayrshires on the stunning isle of Westray, a short ferry trip from mainland Orkney. The land is farmed traditionally, working with nature, creating top quality pasture through sowing many varieties of grasses and herbs, giving high life quality for their cows and fine milk quality for their cheese production.

  • Cheesemaker
  • Pasteurised milk from own Ayrshire cows
  • Vegetarian rennet

The care and attention they give the animals, milking procedure and cheese making is of the highest possible standard and their skills are evident in the fine cheeses they produce.   This incredible attention to detail ensures their cheeses are of exceptional quality so look out for them.

Their farm nestles in a beautiful spot adjacent Noltland Castle and the names of their cheeses reflect the the island and give them a sense of place: Westray Wife, a traditional washed-rind artisan cheese named after the figurine found on an archaeological dig, Noltland Castle, a creamy tasty fresh yet firm cheese, and the Cannonball, cloth hung fresh cheese brine soaked (available locally on the island). All are equally fabulous and worthy of the finest cheeseboard – available in local island shops and mainland stockists to follow.

Westray itself is well worth a visit. It is full of life with farming, seafood, nature and sandy beaches. Take the short picturesque ferry crossing – it’s the perfect place for foodies, birders, cyclists and historians and also home to a lovely castle and a super bakery – See The Westray Bakehouse entry.
