How to take part in British Food Fortnight

  • Buy British! Make a special effort during British Food Fortnight to buy, cook and enjoy the diverse and delicious range of British food available, in particular local food produced on your doorstep.   • Seek our British food on the menu when you are eating out. If you are going to the countryside for a day out, to stay in a B&B, to go walking, climbing or camping make a special effort to eat in local pubs and restaurants. If the origin of food is not listed on the menu, ask the manager for details on where the main ingredients are sourced.


  • Check whether your local shop, restaurant or pub sells local food and if not, encourage them to do so.  Give them our downloadable guide on taking part in British Food Fortnight; available for free on our A guide is available for retailers, restaurateurs and pub-owners on our taking part pages.


  • Encourage your community to celebrate British Food Fortnight: organise a foodie event in your local sports or social club, your children’s school, your local pub or your community centres.


  • Encourage your children’s school to take part; hundreds of schools take part every year. British Food Fortnight themed school meals; and special lessons and activities on food for the pupils. This is a super time to get children excited about the food grown on their doorsteps.   • Find out what is going on in your region and attend an event or festival. Visit our What’s Happening pages to see what is going on near you. Every county in the country has a food festival during British Food Fortnight so there will definitely be something fun for you and your family and friends to do.


  • Commemorate Harvest Festival: remember how you used to celebrate harvest festival every year in school? British Food Fortnight encompasses the three Sundays of the Harvest Festival calendar and so presents lots of opportunities for harvest celebrations. Attend a traditional harvest festival service in your community; encourage your children’s school to organise harvest celebrations as many did every year in times gone by; or organise your own modern day interpretation of a harvest bash.   • Enter the British Food Fortnight competition: open to everyone, individuals, community groups, shops, pubs, schools, even your whole village, town or city; anyone who is organising events to celebrate British Food Fortnight. You may like to nominate someone who has made a big contribution to promoting food in your area; a teacher, a care home chef, your local shop. See our Community Competition page.
