Indulge in British food! Seek out in-season fruits and vegetables, quality British meat and some of our country's fabulous cheeses and dairy produce when you are out shopping and use these to create delicious meals at home. What about trying some of our most traditional dishes, such as Shepherd's Pie or Apple Crumble, and giving them a modern twist?!

If you have children, consider involving them in the preparation of the meal - British Food Fortnight is a great opportunity to teach them a few cooking skills as well as an appreciation of the pleasures and health benefits of eating good food.

Three Layer Apple Tart PDF Print E-mail

Serves 4

Ingredients

Base

100g/4 oz self raising flour
25g/1 oz ground almonds
75g/3 oz butter
50g/2 oz brown sugar
1 teaspoon lemon juice
1 egg yolk

Filling

450g/1lb cooking apples, peeled and sliced
75g/3oz brown sugar
grated lemon rind

Topping

50g/2oz plain flour
50g/2oz butter
125g/5oz brown sugar

Method
Place the flour and ground almonds in a bowl and rub in the butter to resemble fine breadcrumbs, add the sugar, lemon juice and egg yolk and blend to a paste.

Lightly roll this paste to a circle and press into the bottom of a cake tin lined with baking parchment.

Mix the apples slices with the sugar and lemon rind and spread evenly on the pastry base.

Rub the butter into the flour and mix in the sugar scatter evenly over the apples.

Place the tin onto a baking sheet and bake 375ºF (190ºC) gas mark 5 for 25 minutes until golden brown and caramelised.
