British Food Fortnight 2018 as it happened….

British Food Fortnight is over for another year and what a fantastic year it was! We look back at some of the key highlights of Love British Food and British Food Fortnight 2018.

My Name Is – Young Farmer Ambassadors – British Food is Great

The year started with 12 young farming ambassadors pledging their support. They introduced themselves to the British public with the hashtag #BritishFoodisGreat. We even had some celebrities getting behind the campaign:

British Food Fortnight 2018 Launch Event

Thursday 22nd March saw the 2018 launch event take place at Elystan Street with all the Love British Food ambassadors attending including most of our young farming ambassadors. Phil Howard, Chef Owner at Elystan Street was tasked with producing a 3-course menu to the same price per head that hospitals work to (£2.80) and as expected he worked his culinary magic. Phil served up a delicious steamed hispi cabbage with a coddled Chapel Farm egg dressing and Montgomery cheddar. Then a roulade of Welsh Black Mountain chicken with creamed potato, Worcestershire leek hearts and spinach.Dessert was an Organic buttermilk mousse with Yorkshire rhubarb and orange.

Secretary of State, Michael Gove attended and presented the 2017 British Food Fortnight competition winners – Ginger & Spice Festival – with their trophy.

Candice Brown joins the Love British Food Team

Great British Bake Off 2016 Winner Candice Brown joined the team at the beginning of the year and is a huge supporter of British food, always buying local and seasonal where she can.

Candice joined ambassador Liz Earle on a couple of new webfilms talking about their love for British food.

In addition, Liz filmed 2 films with Wyke Farms and The Watercress Company.

LACA Main Event

Candice Brown and Alexia Robinson attended the LACA Main Event at the NEC Metropole on Wednesday 11th July. Candice demonstrated two brilliant recipes suitable for school dinners – Shepherds Pie and Cornflake Cake.

Alexia Robinson spoke as part of the Local Industry Initiatives session. LACA is new to Love British Food committee and already showing a keen interest in doing much more together.

Sodexo Live

Alexia Robinson attended the Sodexo Live Dinner on Tuesday 25th September and then spoke to delegates on Wednesday 26th September as part of the Thought Leadership Seminar. Sodexo is a partner of Love British Food with activities for British Food Fortnight taking place in many of its units from schools to corporates.

Co-op Magazine Feature

Official partner Co-op gave its support again this year with a spread on young farming ambassadors Hannah Binns and Mary Ankers.


Universal Cookery & Food Festival

Young farming ambassador Katie Smith attended the Universal Cookery & Food Festival and talked to chefs about British Food. Taking our hashtag #BritishFoodisGreat Katie networked and built contacts with some great chefs.

National Young Farmers Clubs

The National Young Farmers Clubs teamed up with Love British Food and called on all its members to get involved in British Food Fortnight, reminding consumers of the high standards of British farming. Farmers were challenged to do one activity during British Food Fortnight, whether organising a talk at a local school, displaying a banner or doing some social media around #BritishFoodisGreat

LACA regional event

Alexia Robinson and young farming ambassador Mary Ankers attended the LACA East Midlands Event on Thursday 4th October at the National Justice Museum in Nottingham to talk to members from the Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire regions.

NACC Training & Development Forum

Alexia Robinson and Candice Brown attended the NACC Training & Development Forum in Nottingham on Friday 5th October. Candice demonstrated a carrot cake recipe to meet the brief for the care home sector. Alexia was on hand to brief delegates on British Food Fortnight and Love British Food.

Co-op School Resource Pack

The school resource pack was updated and revised along with information and stats from Co-op. The packs were issued to Co-op Academies and available here on our website for other schools to download.


Brakes Launch Event

22nd August saw Brakes holding a British Food Fortnight launch event at their kitchens in Covent Garden with chefs Mark Sargent and Gary McClean. Love British Food Ambassador Oli Blanc attended and was on hand to talk to producers.


This year saw the NHS celebrating their 70th anniversary with lots of celebrations taking place around the UK.To tie in with Love British Food and British Food Fortnight, a new logo was designed to celebrate NHS hospitals support for British food over the 70 years of its history. This logo was offered to all UK hospitals serving British food and this will continue in 2019.

British Food Fortnight Events

British Food Fortnight started with delivering British Food hampers to key radio presenters showcasing the best of British food. From Chris Moyles at Radio X, to Chris Evans at BBC Radio 2 plus many more. The presenters could be heard reading our fun facts on British food and tasting the delicious treats included.

Events took place around the UK from festivals such as Thame Food Festival to schools serving British Food Fortnight menus. Emsworth in Hampshire created its very own Food Fortnight and hospitals worked with their communities to ensure the most popular British dishes were served. Care homes got into the spirit of events too by inviting family and friends in for British themed feasts.

Last year’s competition winners Ginger & Spice Festival had Love British Food Ambassador Oli Blanc attending and lending his support to events taking place.


National Harvest Service

The Dioceses of Chelmsford and Ely jointly hosted this year’s National Harvest Festival on 30th September and 14th October, respectively. Supported by HRH, The Duchess of Cornwall who kindly provided the foreword to the Order of Service.

Social Media Recap
