To commemorate HRH The Duchess of Cornwall’s 70th birthday we celebrate Her Royal Highness’ support for Love British Food over the years
Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cornwall has supported Love British Food and British Food Fortnight since the campaign’s early years. Her Royal Highness’ commitment, passion and support for the campaign has been instrumental in its success. To celebrate Her Royal Highness’ birthday we look back at the highlights of her involvement with Love British Food.

In 2008, Her Royal Highnesses The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall visited the ‘Dig for Victory: War on Waste’ allotment in St James’s Park to mark the launch of the 2008 British Food Fortnight’s activities with schools. Their Royal Highnesses visited the allotment and met volunteers who tend the plot before being presented with a carrot cake made by Belhus Chase pupils with carrots picked from the allotment.
HRH The Duchess of Cornwall launched British Food Fortnight’s 2009 educational activities at The Compass Children’s Centre in Gloucester. British Food Fortnight teamed up with charity The Wiggly Worm to give a cookery lesson to fathers of the children who attend the centre.
2009 - HRH The Duchess of Cornwall attended a special Love British Food tea at London’s Dorchester Hotel prepared by the winning pupils of the British Food Fortnight’s school competition: the ‘Cook for Life’ Challenge. The children had taken over the kitchens at The Dorchester to prepare the tea with the help of the hotel’s leading chefs!
2010 - HRH The Duchess of Cornwall and the BBC’s Hairy Biker Chefs, Dave Myers and Simon King, launch Love British Food 2012 at a major launch attended by over 250 retailers and caterers in Westminster Cathedral’s hall in central London. This resulted in British food promotions and celebrations across the country during the Olympics.
Speaking at the event, HRH The Duchess of Cornwall said: “I’m a passionate believer in great British food, not at the expense of the cuisine of other countries, but alongside them. And I am so pleased to have had the chance to see for myself the excellent initiatives being organised in schools and community centres across the country through British Food Fortnight. Our children and grandchildren are the future of good British food. And that’s why British Food Fortnight is so important”.
2011 - For the first time, lunch in Clarence House was cooked and served by school children. HRH The Duchess of Cornwall invited the winning schools from the previous year’s British Food Fortnight School Challenge to Clarence House to cook their chosen dishes for a formal lunch attended by many of the leading organisations that take part in the national food celebration. The occasion was made even more memorable because Her Royal Highness invited the BBC’s Hairy Biker chefs, Dave Myers & Simon King, to work with the children to help them prepare their meal.
In 2012, four Scottish schools travelled to The Palace of Holyrood in Edinburgh, The Royal Family’s seat in Scotland, to show HRH The Duchess of Cornwall their entries for the ‘Cook for the Queen’ competition that British Food Fortnight held to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee. The children spent a wonderful morning in the historic Holyrood kitchens being given a cooking lesson by The Royal Chef. Her Royal Highness attended part of the cooking lesson to see what the children were learning before having a special view of their entries.
In early 2012, HRH The Duchess of Cornwall launched the Cook for The Queen competition in Nova Hreod school in Swindon. The competition was a very special initiative that Her Royal Highness created with the British Food Fortnight organisers to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee. She invited schoolchildren from all over the country to create a special menu that incorporated seasonal British ingredients. HRH The Duchess of Cornwall said “Giving young people the skills they need to cook for themselves is one of the greatest gifts we can give them. If they do not learn about cooking as a child, it becomes increasingly challenging as they grow into adulthood, with the pressure of work and family”.
In the summer of 2012, HRH The Duchess of Cornwall attended a magnificent and very special reception at Buckingham Palace together with Her Majesty The Queen. The four winning schools of the Cook for The Queen competition took over the Buckingham Palace kitchens for the day and, working with The Royal Chef, created the most wonderful tea for The Queen and 50 VIP supporters of Love British Food 2012. The Duchess gave a speech on the day saying: “I have been involved with the work of Love British Food and its annual food promotion, British Food Fortnight, for some years and it is very exciting to see how it has grown and everything it has achieved over the years. Inviting children to Cook for the Queen for Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee is an idea I had a year ago and it has been wonderful to see how schools have responded. 208 schools interested from across the UK, from the tip of Cornwall in the South to the Shetland Isles in the North”.
2013 - HRH The Duchess of Cornwall launched a school initiative ‘Bring Home the Harvest – A Harvest Lottery for School’ at Godolphin Junior School in Slough in 2013. The competition invited schools to produce of Harvest Box of food they had grown themselves or cooked in class and the winners won the chance to be one of 500 children invited to present their harvest boxes at the inaugural National Harvest Service that British Food Fortnight organised in Westminster Abbey that Autumn with The Duchess’s support.

2014 - HRH The Duchess of Cornwall joined hundreds of children and a host of supporters from the world of food and farming to celebrate the harvest at a special service in Birmingham Cathedral in October 2014.
“Teaching young people about seasonality, provenance and how to cook are essential life skills that will enable them to feed themselves as they go into adulthood and give them the knowledge and understanding they need to buy, cook and enjoy healthy, quality food with their families and friends”.
