Case Study: School Food Matters Young Marketeers


On Thursday 1 October, eight London schools took part in our Harvest Sale at Borough Market as part of our Young Marketeers programme.

Our Young Marketeers programme gives children the opportunity to learn where their food comes from and to join forces with market traders to sell their school grown produce. The programme is now in its fourth year, growing from a single harvest sale with eight Southwark schools to two sales hosting 24 primary schools from across London.

Over the past four years 1000s of children have had direct involvement in Young Marketeers. The programme has been enthusiastically received by teachers and children alike who value the opportunity to participate in hands-on food education. Children receive training in growing veg from seed and tips from market traders at Borough, helping them to understand the challenge of bringing fresh produce to market.

All proceeds from the sales go to FareShare and as part of the programme, children see first hand how the money they raise is used by visiting a Fareshare project.One Young Marketeer said:“It's funny that the stuff we grew was sold to people to eat and the money we made helps to give someone else something to eat.” Another added: “The day was awesome and we had loads of fun selling our veg! Together the schools raised over £450 - enough to make 1,800 meals for homeless people using FareShare shelters.”

Schools use the programme to link to elements of the curriculum including maths, literacy, science, geography, PSHE, history and ICT. Teachers report that children learn “excellent life skills” and that the programme worked “very well to develop teamwork and confidence in students.”

Young Marketeers grew out of a conversation with Borough Market in 2011. They wanted to find a way to get more families in Southwark to reap the benefits of this iconic market right in the heart of their community. We jumped at the opportunity to introduce more families to fresh, nutritious fruit and veg, and the stories behind the journey from seed to stall.

Our Harvest Sale remains a highlight in the Young Marketeers calendar as it’s a time to celebrate the joys of growing, harvesting and selling delicious fresh food to raise money for vulnerable families. The Harvest Sale has the added benefit of coinciding with bumper crops of pumpkins and squash offering a visual feast for discerning customers at Borough Market – and the opportunity to raise more cash by adding a ‘guess the weight of the pumpkin’ element!
