Restaurant of the month: The Cafe in the Park
The Cafe in the Park is an all-day casual dining cafe. With a brigade of eight chefs, including two bakers, they take their food very seriously. The business, a husband and wife team, started in a small hut in 2005, with the current premises being built in 2009. With a team of 20 staff Carly Trisk-Grove and her husband are both working in the business everyday.
Based in a 100 acre park of woods, grasslands and lakes in Rickmansworth, just outside London and off J18 of the M25. The cafe seats 80 inside (including 25 in the quiet, adult only space) and a further 120 outside. They even have a mud kitchen for the younger visitors to enjoy.
We had a chat with Carly Trisk-Grove to find out more about her restaurant.
Why do you do what you do?
To demonstrate that it is possible to eat great food without going to a fancy restaurant.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
Working in a team who love food - seeing the chefs 'dance' around the kitchen. Having regular customers who come back week on week.
What do you enjoy the least about your job?
The lack of trained and creative chefs entering the industry.
What achievement for the restaurant are you most proud of?
Raising over £18000 for WaterAid through encouraging customers to donate for chilled/filtered still and sparkling tap water than buy bottles.
Do you use British Produce?
As must as possible. All our meat and cheese is British. We buy organic fruit and veg and always aim to buy whatever is in season.
What do you think is best about using British produce?
Supports our local communities, travels less miles so is fresher.
Why should people buy British?
If we don't the small farmers will disappear and we will all be buying from factory farms.
What is your most popular dish?
Our Park Salad - quinoa, beetroot, cauliflower, seeds, harissa, yogurt etc. Delicious
