Restaurant of the Month: South Quay Bar and Bistro
Situated on the picturesque Harbourside of Paignton which was constructed in 1837, South Quay Bar and Bistro offer a variety of food and drink to tickle all tastebuds. Specialising in local fish and shellfish, the owners pride ourselves in their signature ‘Cracked Crab’ dish and locals love a bowl of locally sourced mussels of an evening!
Whether walking the dog, enjoying a week away, having an evening stroll or just fancy a drink head to South Quay Bar and Bistro. With a fully licensed bar also available serving a wide range of draught beers and ciders, wines, spirits and soft drinks for all to enjoy. Including freshly brewed coffee made in front of your eyes!
Catering all palettes, whether seafood is to your taste or not. From hunters chicken to five bean chilli, children’s meals to cream teas and delicious desserts, the whole family will find something to enjoy. Favourites include:
- SQ Battered Fish and Chips: served with chunky chips, peas, salad and homemade tartare sauce.
- Fish Platter: served with scampi, prawns, whitebait and fish goujons, accompanied by a side salad and crusty bread.
- Scallops: 3 scallops served with black pudding and bacon.
- 8oz Rump: cooked to your taste, our rump is served with chips, peas, onion rings and half a grilled tomato.
Live entertainment can be found most weekends, with bands and acoustic acts playing of an evening plus a new outside seating area. Enjoy the sunshine and food at the same time. What more could you want!
Years ago the building used to be the home of Paignton’s aquarium! Now South Quay Bistro and Bar is open 7 days a week, from 9am – 11pm with food being served until 9pm each day.

Why do you do what you do?
To promote fresh shellfish and encourage people to eat what is off our shores, plus fish is good for you!
What do you enjoy most about your job?
Keeping everything simple, watching people enjoy the freshness and encouraging people to try something new!
What do you enjoy the least about your job?
Not much! I enjoy most aspects of my job.
What achievement for the restaurant are you most proud of?
Promoting local Shellfish, making gluten-free batter with my own recipe for the batter, so everyone can enjoy the fish .introducing whole cracked crab on the menu.
Do you use British Produce?
Only locally sourced produce is served in the bistro.
What do you think is best about using British Produce?
We are an island, we are capable of growing and sustaining all British produce which should be used in all aspects of catering, especially locally grown/caught .Why should people buy British?
We should all buy British produce, it encourages economic growth and helps keep the carbon footprint down.
What is your most popular dish?
SQ Fish and Chips followed by Whole Cracked Crab.
