Producer of the month: Thunderflower Ltd
Thunderflower, based in Devon, are a husband and wife team producing products that they made for themselves for years. A granola and a quince paste were the initial products that the family used to enjoy, but after coming across a mass-produced 'healthy' granola brand, full of preservatives and packed in plastic, it was time for the couple to start selling to others.
Their award-winning Thunderflower Granola ,a delicious blend of toasted oats, nuts, seeds and dried fruit with just a splash of maple syrup. Vegan friendly, with no added salt, dairy or egg, only organic oats are used with many of the other ingredients being organic too. Handmade in small batches and 100% natural, made from ethically sourced ingredients with responsible packaging that is 100% compostable. Exeter Chiefs Rugby Club even feed their squad with it and the team go through it at a fast rate!
Thunderflower Gin is their award-winning gin, handmade in small batches in a traditional 'one-shot' distillation process using 11 quality botanicals to give a smooth and complex Dry Gin.
The name Thunderflower was decided after doing research for local gin botanicals. The couple came across an old Dartmoor legend that the little white stonecrop flowers that sometimes grew on thatched cottage roofs could ward off both lightning and witchcraft. Having decided they were wonderful qualities to possess, Thunderflower was born.
The granola and gin have been awarded gold medals in the Taste of the West product awards.
Delighted with the positive reaction to the brand and with the boost of winning awards the couple now have the confidence that others believe in the quality of the products which motivates them more. It helps living in Devon where there are so many world-class growers, food producers, chefs and eateries as well as a really sophisticated population of food lovers who understand the value of local produce.
Not knowing what is round the corner for Thunderflower, there is so much passion, energy and quality in the food scene they remain very excited to what the future brings, in the meantime the family are still well stocked in gin, granola and quince paste!
