Producer of the month - Stuart Liddell, Greenvale Growing Manager East of England

Stuart Liddell is the Greenvale Growing Manager for the East of England.

Why do you do what you do?

I was born and brought up on a farm, loved being involved in all parts of farm life. No interest in anything outside of the farming environment, including school. Inevitably I went to Agricultural College, and the rest is history.  What gets me up in the morning is the same passion I had as a child -  I love being involved in anything farming.

What do you do at Greenvale?

In my previous company I was employed as a Manager growing potatoes, carrots and parsnips and at the end of my departure they were also growing asparagus.  The company was going through a tough time which sealed my departure.

Departing gave me a new opportunity to go self employed and work for other people, utilising my experience and knowledge particularly in potatoes. One of my customers was Greenvale and after a period of time I was offered the job of Own Growing Manager in the East, with the remit of improving the land base to grow top quality pre-pack potatoes.

What is the most enjoyable part of your job?

Being in a field looking at a crop in full growth and knowing it has the potential to produce a good yield of top quality potatoes.

What is the least enjoyable part of your job?

Sitting in front of a computer screen or doing the obligatory paper work, when I know I should be out in the fields making sure everything is running smoothly.

What achievement are you most proud of?

I have had several in my time, but I should say that the age I am now, my proudest achievement is that I have never been out of work since I left college and always been involved in farming, and by and large have never lost the desire to carry on doing the same, no matter what life throws at you.

Why should we buy British produce?

The markets our industry supplies have some of the highest standards in the world, and British potato growers not only meet but tend to exceed these standards. So buying British guarantee’s quality and food safety, second to none.

If you were an advertising executive what slogan would you use to promote British food?

British Potatoes; Grown on your doorstep, you can’t get fresher than that.
