Producer of the Month: Kate Morgan

Kate Morgan of pork producers D P Morgan and Pockmor tells us about the business she runs with her sister Vicky.

Vicky and Myself are 2nd generation farmers, Our parents bought the farm in 1996. We now have 1700 indoor breeding sows near Driffield, East Yorkshire and 1200 outdoor breeding sows near Malton, North Yorkshire. We take all the progeny through to slaughter on third party farms, selling to Sainsburys and also Karro.

Why do you do what you do?

I guess its a way of life! I ended up helping Dad when he was short staffed and I've never looked back since! I love it, its not a job its a lifestyle.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I love my job, no two days are quite the same! Although we have approximatly 120 sows farrowing each week it is still amazing seeing them give birth and then making sure that we provide them with a happy life, welfare is very much a key focus in our buiness.

What do you enjoy least about your job?

I guess not many people think we have much red tape however I spend a lot of my time filling in forms, showing different people around who are all collecting the same information, I would much prefer to show one person and spend more time with the pigs as they are more important

What achievements are you most proud of?

As a business we have achieved some fantastic things from Farmers Weekly Pig Farmer of the year to being Sainsburys Concept Farm. For me as an indivdual it has to be recieveing a Nuffield Scholar to go and study welfare in Pigs around the World.

Why should we buy British produce?

British farmers don't only provide you with some of the highest welfare meat and produce we also provide you with an amazing countryside. If people dont support British Farmers, it wont just be a case of importing all our food but the country as we all know it will change, we do a lot more than what you all know!

How do you think we should be promoting British?

Its hard to promote products to people if they do not understand why its different. I would not buy a more expensive car if I didnt know why it was more expensive and so I think we need to promote by educating people so they know why British is good and then also the different systems that we have in Britain. We cant expect them to know that some pigs are reared inside on slats and others outside. Farmers need to be more open, going into schools and generally being more proud of what we do.

If you were an advertising executive what slogan would you use to promote British food?

British food, safe, traceable, and reared with care. There is more to this food than whats on your plate, our countryside depends on your support.

What's on the menu this evening?

Spag Bol! British mince of course!

How can people get hold of your produce?

Currently our indoor pigs go into Sainsburys and our outdoor goes to Karro and some of this then goes to America as its antibiotic free. We are also looking into marketing our own into local shops etc, so watch this space!
