Producer of the Month: Jon Thorner's Ltd
Love British Food Official Partner, British Corner Shop, has kindly nominated one of their suppliers as our Producer of the Month. So, on their behalf, we would like to introduce...Jon Thorner's Ltd.
Jon Thorner’s is an award winning butcher and pie maker, with a farm shop based in Pylle, near Shepton Mallet, Somerset. As an award winning butcher we take the quality of the meat we source very seriously, with provenance and animal welfare being some of the key attributes we look for when sourcing. We are especially proud of the beef we offer, because it is all certified as Naturally Reared in the West Country, an accreditation which is independently audited.
Jon Thorner’s produce a kitchen ready range of quiches, pastries, sausage rolls, pork pies, scotch eggs, ready meals, cakes, desserts and of course, our incredibly popular pies. Each pie is individually filled and hand crimped by a member of the kitchen team, with traditional flavours including Steak & Ale, Steak & Stilton and Creamy Chicken & Ham Hock.
We are very proud of our award achievements over the years for our meat and kitchen ready range in product evaluations including British Pie Awards, Taste of the West and the Great Taste Awards.
Jon Thorner’s foundation is rooted in Somerset’s farming and production industries. For nearly 40 years managing director and founder Jon Thorner has sourced locally farmed meat and locally produced items, and has a reputation of fair pricing and trading.
Jon Thorner’s has a farm shop in Pylle, butchery counters in Farrington’s Farm Shop, Hare Hatch Sheeplands and the award winning Whiterow Farm Shop. The business also supplies many independent retailers across the South West of England, over 50 local schools and two universities.
Why do you do what you do?
I simply love retail!
What do you enjoy most about your job?
The excitement of a thriving, growing business.
What do you enjoy least about your job?
I know it is essential in business, but the bureaucracy involved can really slow progress down sometimes. Food allergens and labeling is also frustrating.
What achievement are you most proud of?
Growing my business from scratch. We have a smart premises and an efficient, profitable business which employs over 120 staff. I am proud to be able to provide people in my local community with employment opportunities.
Why should we buy British produce?
Because I believe we need to support our economy and the farmers who commit so much into producing the food we serve at our table. If we do not support British farmers, we will lose them and end up importing everything. We have strong and stringent controls on quality and welfare in this country, so we can be happy knowing the food we produce is safe and the animals had a quality of life.
How do you think we should be promoting British?
Ideally by only offering British! But I appreciate this isn't always easy, customers can be very price-led. We need to educate those around us - show customers why it's better and by buying British we are keeping the money in the UK, boosting a better and healthier economy.
If you were an advertising executive, what slogan would you use to promote British?
The Best IS British.
What's on the menu this evening?
Rack of Somerset lamb with a herb crust - quick and easy to cook, but looks impressive on the plate.
How can people get hold of your produce?
We have a farm shop in Pylle, plus a butchery counter in farm shops in Farrington Gurney, Beckington and Twyford. We also stock independent retailers across the South West of England including the Co-operative stores and Budgens. A selection of our handmade kitchen ready range is available to purchase from ocado.co.uk
