Producer of the month:Fresh From the Boat
Fresh From The Boat are a husband and wife team based on the south coast within Hampshire! It’s a partnership of 'love' and everything that is done is done with passion. Their boat Sarah C is a local inshore vessel and they only use sustainable fishing practise and our catch is sold to the local community. 5 years ago 80% of the catch was shipped abroad. With Education, Open Days, Cooking & filleting demos 80% of the catch is now sold locally, through a community fish box scheme, weekly hub venues, home delivery as well as selling to local restaurants & fish mongers. The whole ethos is to sell affordable sustainable Fresh Fish. Fish are mainly sold on the same day of catch with less than 10 food miles. From setting up only a few years ago the couple now also support other local boats, by selling their catch. The couple work up to 18 hour days, have an amazing community backing and have just been shortlisted as 'Independent Fresh Fish Retailer of The Year 2018' with the fishing news.
Why do you do what you do?
Its important to celebrate the species we have within our British waters, with education we now sell lots of species such as Grey Mullet, Garfish & Cuttle Fish which normally are not eaten by the British buyer. This now reduces the pressure on stocks that are at risk, we have no discards and our buyers love to see beautiful sparkling Fresh Fish.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
How can you not love working the great outdoors, I used to work in an office! As a fishwife I swapped my Nails & Heels for Wellies & Waterproofs, see nearly every sunrise & sunset and work with mother nature.
What do you least enjoy about your job?
The risks sometimes worry me, working on a commercial fishing boat is the most dangerous job in the UK & we have lost far too many fisherman in the last few years to the sea.
What achievement are you most proud of?
Connecting with our local community and no longer being the ghosts of the sea, being able to sell our catch locally, receiving the Business of the Year Award 2016 and Family Business of the Year 2016 and also been shortlisted as Independent Fish Retailer of the Year 2018 within UK & Ireland, voting is still open until 29th April 2018.
Why should we buy British produce?
To support and keep our British boats and coastal communities going, but also there is a story behind your food, I can tell you when the fish you bought was caught, who caught it, how it was caught and if needed advise you how to cook it.
How do you think we should be promoting British?
With a story behind each produce, people love to know where their food comes from and the love and passion that's put into that produce.
If you were an advertising executive what slogan would you use to promote British food?
Eat Best, Eat British
What's on the menu this evening?
The Brill has arrived so 'Eat British, Eat Best, Eat Brill'
How can people get hold of your produce?
At present we only supply a 20 mile radius of Emsworth, Hampshire, but you can log on our website, Facebook, Instagram or twitter, see what we are catching and place an order via Facebook, email or simply phone us.
