Producer of the month: Billy Franks
We talked to the people at Billy Franks Jerky about their business. Read more here:
What started off as a passionate hobby in Will’s home kitchen grew and grew, so much so that he left his job to make jerky full time. He moved production
into a small unit above a brewery in Hackney Wick for a couple years and then last year, after a successful crowd funding campaign, we moved into a
much larger space behind Maltby Street Market.
Passionate about provenance and quality, Billy Franks only uses the best British grass fed beef and English Rose Turkey to make the healthiest (and tastiest)
jerky on the market. Our jerky makes the perfect afternoon snack to help beat the 3pm slump, as a natural protein source after the gym and pairs perfectly
with a pint after work.
Having grown up in Texas, founder Will Yates was literally teethed on a piece of beef jerky. When he moved back to the UK, he was unable to find anything
as healthy, wholesome and tasty as traditional Texan style jerky - so Billy Franks was born.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
We are still a relatively small company so when we get fan mail or comments on social media from customers who have tried our jerky, it really makes our day. We put a lot of love into our jerky and when people tell us they love it, it makes it all worth it.
What do you least enjoy about your job?
The hours - we put a lot in to make our mouthwatering jerky. Unlike some jerky or biltong brands, we manufacture all of our products in house so it truly is a labour of love.
What achievement are you most proud of?
We are super proud of our awards including four Great Taste Awards, Young British Foods (YBF) Meat Category Winner and three Taste TV International Jerky Awards. It's really satisfying when you get industry recognition!
Why should we buy British produce?
Britain has some amazing produce, some might argue some of the best in the world. We certainly think so - especially when it comes to meat.
How do you think we should be promoting British?
It is all about education. Consumers need to know the benefits of buying British and also understand how convenient it is to buy British too. Teaming up with the right influencers on social media, working with supermarkets to highlight British brands on shelves and a robust PR plan extolling the virtues of 'keeping it local' will definitely go a long way towards getting the British public clued up on why they should buy British.
If you were an advertising executive what slogan would you use to promote British food?
The taste of home
What's on the menu this evening?
Chorizo pasta with red wine!
How can people get hold of your produce?
Ocado, Wholefoods, Billyfranks.co.uk and loads of farmshops and delis and pubs across the UK. You can check out our website for the latest stockist as we are adding new ones all the time - www.billyfranks.co.uk
