Blog: Hart's Traditional Turkeys
Based in Gloucestershire on the banks of the River Severn, Hart's Traditional Turkeys business started some thirty-five years ago. After helping a local farmer with his turkeys in the run-up to Christmas, Rob Hart and his wife enjoyed it so much that when an opportunity arose in the village to buy a smallholding it was the start of Hart's Traditional Turkeys. The couple then pursued their dream of rearing slow growing, high welfare turkeys which customers wanted.
At that time the couple both had demanding full-time jobs and were raising a family - real life multi-tasking!
With the benefit of reinvestment, premises expanded and now include a farm shop highlighting Tastes of Gloucestershire.
Welfare of the turkeys is paramount. Extraordinary care is taken with what the turkeys are fed, how they are housed and handled. The healthy free range life they enjoy means that they create the most delicious, juicy and tender meat.
Hart's Traditional Turkeys are members of the Traditional Farm Fresh Turkey Association and committed to their Quality Assurance Code and Guarantee. These standards give customers confidence about the meat they are buying.
Love British Food chatted to Rob Hart in the run up to his busy time of year.
Why do you do what you do?
On our farm we ensure our turkeys all enjoy the best possible life going above and beyond the required standards. My family all enjoy getting involved in the business and hopefully our grandson will get involved too (although a little young at the moment). We have no other livestock so focus solely on the birds working hard all year round to produce the finest quality birds for the most important meal of the year!
What do you enjoy most about your job?
Bringing passion, enthusiasm and attention to detail in producing free range turkeys. We also enjoy meeting our customers each year and hearing their feedback after the big day.
What do you least enjoy about your job?
We love our business and take pride in looking after the birds through the year so it is tough when we see the empty buildings and paddocks after Christmas.
What achievement are you most proud of?
We are incredibly well respected with an excellent reputation, both for our high welfare standards and customer service.
Why should we buy British produce?
British farmers and producers follow exceptionally high standards with green credentials giving the customer the confidence that the end product is excellent quality and will be delicious.
If you were an advertising executive what slogan would you use to promote British food?
Buy the Best, Buy British
What's on the menu tonight?
Turkey sausages with British mashed potatoes and British seasonal veg
