Case Study: The Great Cornish Food Festival

The Great Cornish Food Festival is the only festival anywhere that’s completely dedicated to Cornish food and drink. We host more than 60 different Cornish-based producers for a three day weekend at the end of September, generating a footfall of around 40,000 people each year to Cornwall’s capital Truro. The event focuses on the incredible quality of the food produced in Cornwall, and we aim for as much diversity as possible, from locally-grown fruit and vegetables to artisan bread, world-class gin to freshly-foraged goodies. In our feedback surveys, visitors consistently comment on the variety of produce on offer, and the fact that we have something for everyone – including two demonstration stages featuring more than 40 different chefs and food experts, that concentrate on getting people learning about new techniques and trying new and exciting products. 

This year’s stages saw everything from nose to tail butchery, the story of bees and honey, foraged pasta making and pastry masterclasses, with plenty more tastings and techniques to sample and learn about throughout each day. The festival also hosts a dedicated Discover Zone for children to learn all about food and where it comes through via a packed timetable of exciting activities, including story-telling, cow-milking, fishing and pizza-making.

This year, the festival brought more than 9,000 people to Cornwall, of whom more than a third had travelled especially for the festival. The benefit to local businesses in the town is huge (last year the festival generated over £3m for the local economy), especially as it falls outside of the main tourist season.
