Case Study: South Downs Launch of the region's British Food Fortnight

South Downs food and drink was celebrated on September 21st 2015 with the regional launch of British Food Fortnight, when the team behind southdownsfood.org brought together over 120 leading lights in the industry and media at the Rathfinny Estate in East Sussex.

World beating vineyards from Sussex, including Bolney Wine Estate, Plumpton College, Bluebell Vineyard and Ridgeview offered tastings of their superb sparkling wines and 20 local producers offered tastings of their fare, from chocolates to baked goods and from honey to roast lamb reared and made on the South Downs.

The event saw some of the more unique food and drink in the country being showcased, such as sheep’s milk and ice cream, from Top Paddock Dairy near Horsham (who later that night appeared on Channel 4’s Food Unwrapped) as well as innovative sushi created by Kyoto Kitchen in Winchester in East Hampshire, made with locally grown ingredients, including wasabi, venison and smoked trout.

Some local celebrities helped in the celebrations: The Raw Chocolate Company made an appearance, hot on the heels of their Dragons’ Den success on BBC TV a few weeks previously. MasterChef: The Professionals Winner, Steven Edwards, hosted local cheese and ale matching and led the guests in a toast to local food and drink.

Throughout the fortnight, several producers in the South Downs region held special events and promotions including a coffee morning, special offers and competitions.
