Case Study: Beverley Food Festival
On 4th October 2015 Beverley Food Festival celebrated 10 years of promoting local food, its growers and producers. It has established a great tradition of enjoying seasonal food at its freshest and best, and is a true harvest celebration for the local community and visitors to the town.
It started in 2006, with just 35 stalls. This year, there were 108 stalls, all selling local food and drink, and approx. 24,000 visitors attended.
Organised by Beverley Town Council, the Beverley Food Festival has always been a free to attend, community event, which is a family day out of food, festivities and fun! It brings people of all ages together; educates about food provenance; organises Local Food Awards; introduces consumers to producers; and helps affirm and sustain healthy eating practices. It also supports the local economy and keeps the high street alive.
Eight renowned local chefs gave cooking demonstrations using local produce, in the Food Theatre Marquee. Entertainment included: Beverley Brass Band; the Beverley Garland Dancers; Beverley Ukelele Group; face painting; and circus skills workshops with Professor Fiddlesticks.
Young people were given a showcase of their own at the event: local singers performed; apprentice chefs from a local college assisted the chefs in the Food Theatre Marquee; and two young chefs cooked a 2-course meal using local ingredients, in the live final of the HEYHA Copper Saucepan Competition. BBC Radio Humberside presenters Jonathan Parker and Chloe Davies attended the Food Festival and took part in a 'Ready Steady Cook'- style challenge.
People attending said: 'This is the best one around that we have been to. Already put next year's in the diary - brilliant!', 'Interesting varieties makes you buy things that you wouldn't think about cooking ordinarily.'
Stallholder Ian Sneddon said: 'Beverley Food Festival has an amazing setting, superb organisation and a really successful range of stalls. With inspiration from the food theatre, it's a real foody treat.'
