National Fish and Chip Day Celebrations Are Biggest Yet

On June 1, Fish and chip lovers across the UK gathered together to celebrate National Fish & Chip Day. From the hardworking fishermen and farmers who supply the essential high-quality ingredients needed for fish and chips to the restaurants, pubs and fish & chip shops serving the UK’s favourite takeaway, this year’s National Fish & Chip Day, organised by the NEODA, was the biggest one yet.

National Fish & Chip Day highlights the incredible work of everyone involved in our amazing industry. As the UK’s number one fish and chip shop, it was great to be involved once again with this delicious campaign, working alongside industry partners to show that fish and chips is still the UK’s number one choice when it comes to their favourite takeaway.

We designed and launched a custom snapchat filter for all of our customers to snap and share their pictures of fish and chips with us. We had a great time speaking live to Jo Whiley and Simon Mayo on the BBC Radio 2 about the UK’s love for fish and chips, as well as being able to highlight the importance of choosing MSC certified sustainable fish and talking about how the industry is working together to address the issues.

For those who were unable to make the journey down to their local chippy, we shared some of our top tips with METRO on how to recreate the perfect fish and chips from the comfort of your own home. There are so many options to choose from when it comes to finding the right fish, but always ensure the fish that you’re using is sustainably sourced. For the perfect batter, make sure it’s refrigerated right after you’ve made it, and ensure the oil you’re using is piping hot when you lay the fish down in it.

It’s great to see a dish that has been at the heart of our family for over 75 years being celebrated on such a national scale. Fish and chips continues to grow in popularity with fish and chip shops across the UK diversifying their offers so everyone is able to enjoy the great taste of fish and chips, with gluten-free, Halal and even vegan options now available.

It’s important to protect the future of our oceans for generations to come, so it’s fantastic to see so many fish and chip shops, as well as industry partners, working together to highlight the importance of sustainable sourcing methods. Congratulations to NEODA and everyone involved for the best National Fish and Chip Day yet. With Great British Food Fortnight just over a few months away, we can’t wait to do it all over again soon!
